Are Phone Screen Protectors Worth It?

Spring is in the air and summer is on the horizon. One great sign of summer is that the days are getting longer, the sun is shining, and the flowers are blooming. And you are spending more time outside.

Think about this. It’s the first beautiful weekend after several weeks of rain and gloom. You decide to get your bike out of storage and go for a ride through your neighborhood. You grab a bottle of water, put on a helmet, and put your smartphone in your pocket.

As you ride up and down the streets, feeling the sun shining on your face and the wind blowing through your hair, you decide to continue on a different route. You want to stay outside for as long as possible, and why not check out some new scenery?

It’s a gorgeous day and who knows when there will be another one! You aren’t familiar with the new neighborhood you’re in, and you don’t know that several streets are under construction. As you turn a corner, your bike hits a pothole and you tumble to the ground. Standing up, you brush yourself off and look around. Fortunately, you’re okay--just a small scratch on your leg. But that’s when you see it.

Your brand new smartphone is lying on the pavement, face down. You know what we’re going to say next. You pick up your phone and it happened.

Your smartphone screen has a huge crack. Right down the middle. There’s no way you can use it without cutting your fingers.

When you purchased your new phone a few weeks ago, you immediately bought a durable case in the store. You’re not afraid to admit that you drop your phone on occasion. We’ve all been there! But you never thought about buying a screen protector. Maybe you even wondered, do new phones need screen protectors? Smartphones today are extremely reliable. They are very different from the first smartphones that some of us had. Smartphone screens have come a long way.

New iPhones and many new Android phone screens are made with Gorilla Glass, which is extremely tough and resistant. Because of that, many think that smartphone screen protectors are unnecessary. These days, smartphones are durable enough, right? But we have other thoughts. Even if you are overly careful with your phone, accidents happen. It only takes one mishap to end up with a cracked screen. You spent hundreds, maybe even thousands, of dollars on your phone. The last thing you want is to shell out more cash to fix a broken screen.

Whether you have a brand new smartphone or if you are still rocking last season’s model, we always recommend purchasing a screen protector. If you’re not sure what a screen protector is or why you should always have one on your phone, then keep on reading! There are many reasons why you should always buy smartphone screen protectors. We’re going to let you know what they are and why you should buy one today. We will also let you know what a few of our favorite screen protectors are and what to do if you ever have a cracked screen.

What is a screen protector?

It’s exactly what it sounds like! A screen protector is a thin piece of material that sits securely on your phone screen to protect it from any scratches or cracks. If you drop your phone onto a hard surface, such as pavement, concrete, or hardwood flooring, the chances of it shattering are less likely if you have a screen protector. There are four types of screen protectors. The first two are both plastics: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) and Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU).

PET screen protectors are very cheap. They are so thin and light that once placed on your smartphone, they are nearly invisible. TPU screen protectors are also a thin, flexible type of plastic. They are also more durable than PET. Plastic screen protectors are more affordable than glass and are reusable. They are easy to attach to your screen, and you can remove them at any time if you want to use your phone without it.

Plastic screen protectors are thin and they usually cover just the main screen. If your smartphone has curved edges, there’s a good chance that plastic smartphone screen protectors will not give you the best coverage. Additionally, over time the plastic will get very dirty since they are not fingerprint-resistant. The third type of screen protector is tempered glass screens. They are very common and what we suggest looking for when buying a smartphone screen protector.

Glass screen protectors may be a bit more expensive, but they feel just like your real screen. Glass screens have multiple layers that are more resistant to scratches and breaking.

Glass screen protectors are also more resistant than plastic. They are very durable, but if you break a glass screen protector, always remove it from your phone as soon as possible so that you do not cut your hand on the glass.

Finally, there are liquid screen protectors that help with small scratches but are not likely to save your phone from major cracks. Liquid glass usually comes in a wipe that you spread on your phone. When the liquid dries, your phone screen is protected.

There are pros and cons to buying plastic or glass screen protectors. It just depends on your preference to what kind you should buy and what you can afford.

If you’ve had your smartphone for several years, there’s a good chance it has some minor wear and tear. But if you have a durable case and a screen protector, it can keep your device looking new for much longer.

However, it doesn’t matter how careful you are; accidents happen. That’s why we always recommend buying a smartphone screen protector.

What are the best screen protectors?

With screen protectors, you get what you pay for.

If you buy a cheap, plastic screen protector for a couple of bucks, there’s a good chance it won’t last that long. Instead of buying multiple screen protectors over your smartphone’s lifetime, read user reviews, and purchase a reliable screen protector that will last for years.

When researching smartphone screen protectors, always pay attention to the Mohs hardness scale. Freidrich Mohs invented this scale in 1812 and it compares the hardness of different materials. For example, diamonds are very tough and they rank at ten on the scale. Talc is a soft material, so it ranks at number one.

Many tempered glass smartphone screen protectors are rated 9H on the Mohs scale, which means they are incredibly durable and resistant to scratches or cracks.

Another thing to keep in mind when buying a screen protector is the look and feel of the screen. As we said above, glass smartphone screen protectors will almost always feel just like your phone. They snap on to your phone screen easily and usually cover the beveled edges. Unlike plastic screens, glass screens are easy to clean and maintain.

Whether you have an iPhone or an Android, screen protectors will save your phone screen time and time again! One of our favorite iPhone screen protector companies is Caseology. Their screens have excellent touch responsiveness and are easy to install. Additionally, their screen protectors are waterproof! Caseology screens work great with their cases as well.

Another great iPhone screen protector is from UNBREAKcable. Their screen protectors rank 9H hardness and are proven to hold up against everyday wear and tear. UNBREAKcable screens are shatter-resistant and have high transparency so that you can always see your display with no problem. Since there are thousands of different kinds of Android phones, always make sure you are buying a screen protector designed to fit your phone, whether you have a Samsung Galaxy, an LG Stylo, or the Google Pixel.

A very reputable Android screen protector company is IQ Shield. Their snap-on screen protectors are classified as “smart film.” The transparent screens are anti-bubble and merge with your existing phone screen with seamless accuracy.

Why should you buy a screen protector?

Let’s face it: you don’t want to fix a broken screen! There are many disadvantages of trying to fix a cracked screen at home, and we always recommend going to a professional to have one repaired or replaced. Even though new smartphones are made with Gorilla Glass screens, they are not 100% resistant to scratches or cracks. If you drop your phone on pavement, concrete, or another hard surface, there is a good chance it will break.

If you drop your smartphone and it has a screen protector, the screen on your phone will likely not be damaged. If the screen protector cracks, it’s easy and relatively inexpensive to replace. Smartphones are expensive. They may cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, and newer models are pricier every year. Not only are cell phones expensive, but so is a cracked screen repair, especially if you drop your phone often.

The cost varies on the kind of smartphone you have and whether or not you have device protection. Additionally, it depends on where you take your phone to fix a broken screen. If you send your smartphone to the manufacturer, such as Apple or Samsung, it may cost you more than going to a local phone repair shop.

There are many ways to be proactive with your smartphone to ensure it is always protected. Two simple places to start is to have a phone case and a screen protector on your smartphone. And, having device protection is one of the smartest things you can do. Smartphone device protection usually costs under $20 a month (and even less with Lori). By paying that small amount, your phone is protected against damage - and even theft and loss.
